A short history · 1927 - 2027

It began with a notebook.

Winemaking in the Orsag family goes back further than anyone wrote down. Vina Orsag begins with the first written record, a notebook kept from 1927, and in 2027 it turns one hundred.

  1. 1927Janko · 1894 - 1950

    The notebook

Janko Orsag kept a Notebook of Work in the Vineyard, faithfully recording the seasons from 1927 to 1947. In 1927 the klijet, the family's press house, was built at the top of the vineyard.

His time on Goli otok, and the early death that followed, cut his plans short.

  2. Ivica1928 - 1979

    A quarter hectare

Janko's son Ivica carried the tradition on with his mother Ana, known to everyone as Nanika (1901 - 1981), and his wife Ružica. Together they tended a quarter of a hectare of vines, mostly for the family's own table.

    Plot by plot

After his father's death, Ivica's son Edo took over the vineyard and the klijet, later joined by his wife Nada and their children Ana and Janko. Patiently, plot by plot, they grew the estate and invested in machinery and equipment.

    A new vineyard

The klijet was renovated in 2008. In 2010 the old vineyard was cleared and one full hectare of new vines went into the ground.

    Down to the old barn

The klijet on the hilltop had grown too small to work in, so the family's farm building on Martinečka ulica in Zlatar was converted into our winery and tasting room. Same barn, then and now.

    Resistant by design

Flavescence dorée, zlatna žutica, hit many vineyards in the area and forced us to pull out our first plantings of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Manzoni.

We replanted with PIWI varieties, bred to resist disease.

Our story

Old roots, new wines.

A hundred years ago, Janko Orsag was already keeping data: spray dates and mixtures, sugar levels, hectolitres of must, all written into a notebook by hand. That habit never left the family. Four generations of knowledge and instinct, passed from hand to hand, still shape every decision in the vineyard.

We have always reached for what comes next. We were among the first in Croatia to plant disease-resistant PIWI varieties, and today's generation brings the same curiosity to everything else: how we work, how we tell our story, and how Vina Orsag steps fully into the 21st century.

The wines are where it shows. We take these new varieties somewhere they have never been, experiment with new ways of making exceptional wine, and lay down vintages and barriques for the generations still to come.

From Janko's notebook, 1935
In 1935 the harvest was excellent: 33 hectolitres of must were gathered.
